Glossary term
Also known as Syndrome X - Insulin resistance syndrome
Three of five: large waist, high BP, high glucose, high triglycerides, low HDL. Doubles cardiovascular risk.
Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed when three or more of these five criteria hit: waist circumference over 40 inches (men) or 35 inches (women), blood pressure 130/85+ or on antihypertensives, fasting glucose 100+ mg/dL or on diabetes medications, triglycerides 150+ mg/dL, HDL under 40 (men) or 50 (women). Roughly one in three US adults meets criteria. It roughly doubles cardiovascular risk and quintuples type 2 diabetes risk. GLP-1 therapy plus training and protein dismantles most of the cluster within 6-12 months. Screen with the Advanced panel before any metabolic intervention.
