Glossary term
Also known as Compounded drug - Pharmacy compounding
Pharmacy-made versions of drugs, often at custom doses. Legal where state rules allow. Not FDA-reviewed for efficacy.
Compounded medications are custom-prepared by licensed compounding pharmacies - most commonly when the branded version is on FDA shortage, when a patient needs an allergen-free form, or when a different dose is required. Compounded GLP-1s exploded during the 2022-2025 semaglutide and tirzepatide shortages. Trade-offs: compounded formulations aren't reviewed by the FDA for efficacy, sterility depends on 503A/503B pharmacy standards, and access is shrinking in 2026 as shortages resolve. Any compounded prescription you receive should come with a COA tied to the lot number. We disclose sourcing upfront.
